MV-8800 + MPC Live 2 Studio Integration
« on: October 05, 2020, 05:39:15 pm »
All,

I've been an MV-8800 user for about two years and have been creating songs, but I was looking for another DAWless solution that was more portable. So, recently I purchased as MPC Live 2, which is technologically advanced when compared to MV (+10 ~ 12 years), but different musical instrument/workstation.

Next, I started integrating the MPC Live 2 with the current studio setup where MV-8800 was main sequencer and sound / sample source.

Here is what I've found interesting:
1. The MPC Live 2 can mount the MV-8800 internal hard drive via its USB port (see attached screenshots). This is obviously great for Audio file / Sample exchange between the two units.
2. Not surprisingly, the MV-8800 and MPC Live 2 synchronize (either way) via MIDI Clock and MMC to the bar/beat resolution. Also, MTC time code works as well, but since MIDI clock works so well, I don't see a need for it in my setup.
3. The MPC Live 2 Sample editing is way more efficient/fast, and the pads are more responsive than MV.
4. I prefer the MV-8800 sample beat length setup for looping / time stretch vs. MPC Live 2 (maybe I just haven't learned how).

Does anyone have both MV-8800 and MPC X/Live/One? What is your experiences?

Regards,
John Detroit

Does anyone know if there is a MV to MPC / patch to program utility? This would bypass the need to access the MV from an MPC, as in JohnDetroit's case, because I can see no advantage to using the MV if you're using the MPC Live, other than if you wanted to degrade the sound quality of your MPC project. The MPC sequencer is better and the time stretch on the MPC is cleaner. Don't see the advantage. It might be right in front of me, but I don't see it.

Also for anyone interested, I checked and the MV doesn't show up in the Plug Ins in Beats as it does on JohnDetroit's Live. Thought I'd give it a shot, but no dice. Like I said the patch converter could be handy, but it's not like the MV's patches and patch edit options are anything to write home about.

I really wish I had a better use for the MV. I'm a legacy MPC/Beats user and my MV is dormant 99% of the time when working DAW-less unfortunately.

In reply, my MV is connected to a 4 port USB 3.0 hub with switches on each port, and the USB hub is connected to my MPC Live and i’ve been sharing my MPC Live Expansion and Splice sample libraries with my MV. I just like handing file transfers without a computer. However, the ratio of use of my MPC live vs MV-8800 is 95% to 5%. This is not unexpected since MPC live is new for me and I am still learning how to use use. I’ll keep posting to this thread over the coming months as I evaluate the integration of these two DAWless workstations, and which one gets more use.

PS: here is an updated photo of my MPC and MV where I am using the external monitor, which has its advantages for linear sequencing and editing.
