Sweet skills you have,There are some machines out there that definitely would gain from some reengineering since they so unfinished business , you will probably learn alot with this, keep at it,good luck.
As for the MV what i would like to see specially on the 8000, is the ability to fade out or fade in on any of the 8 tracks, unless i am missing something i cant seem to find it anywhere .cant seem to think of anything else right now  but if i can i will post here.

Thanks.  I agree there are lots of machines (esp my Roland gear) which have lots of gaps in functionality.  I'm finding the work for the MV series I'm doing to be a bit more than I bargained for.   :)

Things are progressing though, may have an update post tonight.

Convert your track into a partial and set the attack in the ADSR section. There's a lot of stuff you can do in partial settings in lieu of revamping the audio track section.

Hangnef I haven't forgotten about the 909/8800 sampler comparison.

Thanks, and no rush at all... I'm stuck in reverse engineering land for quite a while

I have an MV8800 and it seems to save samples if no changes are made as well.  Maybe it was worse before??
No idea, I got my unit last year and it was already updated to latest firmware (v. 3.54)

I was thinking, you could maybe add to your list of firmware changes the possibility of boot if no CD rom is detected?
Some users add a CF card reader in place of the CD rom (replacing the hard drive but using the CD rom opening in front for the reader), it seems they have to let the cd rom connected, else MV won't boot

Yup, good idea.  I'll add that to the list, should be straightforward.

The update that prevented re-saving of samples where there had been no change was a major speed improvement.
This update was just for the MV8800 right? My MV8000 will save samples file even if no change is made  ???

That's a major speed increase. Excellent progress!

I usually have one song per project and the other songs are newer versions. I have found through experience that it's best not to burn your boats by overwriting earlier versions :)

Not sure the Library folder is particularly useful. 16 onboard sounds per project is more than enough for me but opinions may differ.

I think Roland decided to play safe by loading/saving everything every time. The update that prevented re-saving of samples where there had been no change was a major speed improvement.

The speed of mainstream computers was not so good in those days. And the reliability of file operations wasn't 100% either. Systems could freeze in mid-save...all gone!  :o

Yeah, that seems like a good use of multiple songs.  My plan is to not change functionality at all, you will still be able to have 16 songs, etc etc, but if you aren't utilizing them, loading/saving will be faster.

Wow, so saving samples in earlier versions was slower?    :o  :o   ;)

That's another improvement I can make though -- have a 'dirty' bit for each of the files, if it isn't set, don't write it out.

Ok, so I have some numbers, and I'm quite surprised!

I used the 8800 Basics project.  The project has 1 song (but all 16 folders along with their files) and 16M worth of samples.

Saving the project with all songs averaged 40.5 seconds

Saving the project with just 1 song averaged 21 seconds

I can't believe how much time is spent dealing with all of those files.  Either the FAT file system implementation is not good, or the processing and overhead of looking up and processing those files is intensive, but I can't imagine it is THAT bad.    ???

So, this is probably do-able.  The hard part is going to be handling the project load and filling in those structures in memory when the directories/files aren't present and saving somewhere how many songs a project has.  Lots more work to do, but this is promising for a first stab at improving performance.

Not sure why Roland did things this way, maybe back in the early/mid 2000s no one cared about the speed?    ;)

Seems like a good deal, but not a fan of the iLok stuff... last time I used it my Windows machine would BSOD.

Is there a link somewhere showing the difference between the pro/lite/etc versions?

More often than not I will use mastering after mixing so I don't mind that popup so much.

You could perhaps have an option in system settings to disable popups individually or globally?

That's what I was thinking as well.  I've made good progress here, but man the UI code is a beast, super hard to follow for many reasons!  To suppress that dialog I will have to fork a significant amount of code to do it, but it can be done.  Creating new dialogs/panels is going to be excruciatingly difficult, I may have to build a tool to generate the code since it is pretty insane how it is done.

Past few nights I've been focusing on project load/save speed.  There are 521 files in every project and 19 directories, most of them being related to the 16 songs.  You'd figure the loading time would be proportional to the number of songs in your project.  But as someone had determined, and I verified, that's not the case... the files are there no matter what.

However, in memory, songs are marked with a NULL at a certain address if they aren't initialized/used.  I'm going to try using this same logic when loading/saving the songs in a project and see how much of a speed difference it makes.  Well, my 1st test is going to be to compare when just saving out 1 song since that is a 1 byte change, but if the difference is significant enough, I will start to code the loading/saving change.  So, the files would still be present, but only be utilized when needed.

I only use 1 song per project, but I imagine other users probably fill all that up, but it makes sense to me that for bigger projects, it takes just a little longer.

After that I'll tackle instruments, pictures (this directory is empty if no pictures so probably no real benefit), the samples (which is just 1 file so probably not much to do there) and also the actual disk access.

Next post will hopefully have some rough timing measurements.   :)

Hmm, I was fiddling around in the mastering mode and I can't get that "do you want to burn a cd" popup dialog to come up.  I've found the related code, but am trying to figure out where in the mastering process that shows up.

You have to actually record a master first and then when it is finished that dialog pops up automatically.

Perfect, thanks for that info.

Does it make sense to remove the Mixdown -> Mastering one as well?

I just saw where you asked what I meant by importing the 909's sample capabilities. The 909's "sample combine" feature is unique, but I think there might be a few other little quirks that the 909's sampler allows that the MV does not. I can do a deeper comparison into both if you really think you might import some 909 features. It's the menu diving of the 909 that makes sample editing a slower process than on the 8800, but with more options there's going to be more menus.
The 909's sample editing graphic interface is superior to the 8800's. Perhaps it's less user friendly in some ways, perhaps more precise however, and certainly displays a bit more info on one screen than the 8800.

I forgot to mention also that the 909 can take an incoming audio signal and autotune it in real time with the 16 velocity pads. There is no reason why the 8800 shouldn't be able to do this with some finagling.

That would be awesome Smudge, thanks.  Yeah, anything good from the MC-909 I'd like to pull in, especially because it should involve less work as a good chunk of the code is already there!  :)

I do hope to make some improvements to sample editing too on the MV.

That incoming audio feature sounds pretty cool, is there a name for that in the MC-909?  I'll add it to the list.

It's the same both ways: it starts searching for a disc and asks you to insert one if absent. Then a Cue Sheet windows appears from which you add your mixes/masters. It defaults to the the MASTERTR folder but any folder cab be selected. The only option is to change the gap in seconds you want to put between your tracks.

There is command 3 from the Mastering menu for burning a CD. Audio files can be taken from any folder.

The thing about V-Link is you would have a spare button (with blue LED). Think of the possibilities :)

Yup, an extra unused button is like gold.  :)

What is the sequence to get to the burn a cd after mastering popup?

Please remove the popup after mastering asking if you want to cut a CD.

Please add the ability to "export" individual (or multiple simultaneous) tracks direct to disk. Using Remix to do this adds a small delay to the start of the track.

I think the Pix Jam thing could go.

Re. successful firmware upgrade from optical disk, could it be that there is error correction taking place? Don't laugh :)

Great progress hangnef!!

Thanks!

The first request sounds quite easy, is there still a way to burn a CD if you dismiss that dialog w/ no?

And yeah, V-Link is on my list of things to go if it comes down to it, Pix-Jam would be next.  I'm hopeful I won't have to resort to removing anything.  I need to do some testing to be sure.

It's possible there's some error correcting going on.  I'm going to format my MV's HD and try from disk again.  If it repeats in the same spot, I'll see if a different drive works (I have a spare).  If that exhibits the same behavior, something else is up and will require some digging into.

I've posted my current list of requests for changes here, let me know if I have missed anything obvious.  It's a long list and I highly doubt I could get to everything, but I like being able to choose.   :)
